What is EXIF metadata?

Most images carry extra information saved inside the file. This is called EXIF metadata. A camera or phone adds it when a photo is taken, and editing programs, scanners, and other tools can add or change it later too. It can include the camera and lens, the exposure settings, the date and time, the artist and copyright, the software that saved the file, and often the GPS location.

Does editing the metadata change the image itself?
