What the pixel art scaler does
Pixel art is made of a small grid of hand-placed pixels. When you enlarge it with a normal image editor, the software blends between those pixels to fill the gaps, and the sharp, blocky look turns into a soft blur. That is the opposite of what pixel art needs.

Scale2x andScale3x come from the EPX family of pixel art algorithms. They enlarge by 2× or 3× and smooth the jagged steps along diagonal lines, which can make curved sprites look cleaner.
