Remove Background from Image

Remove the background from a photo or image and download a clean transparent PNG. Add your picture and the subject is cut out automatically, or clear a plain background by color instead. This free background remover runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and your original file stays untouched.

Drag and drop an image here, or

PNG, JPG, or WebP up to 25 MB. Nothing is uploaded.

What the background remover does

This tool takes the background out of an image and leaves just your subject on a transparent page. It works two ways. By default, the automatic cut-out runs as soon as you add a picture: an AI model finds a person in the photo and removes everything else, even against a busy background. If you would rather clear a plain background, the color method reads the background color and clears every pixel that matches it, which is great for a product, a logo, or anything on a plain background.

It clears the background starting from the edges of the image and working inward. That is why a color that also appears inside your subject, like a white shirt on a white background, is kept: it is walled off from the edge by the subject, so the fill never reaches it. If the first result leaves a fringe or cuts too much, the tolerance slider changes how many shades of the background color count, and edge softness blends the cut-out edge.

Leave the background transparent for a PNG you can place on any color, or drop white or a color behind your subject first. Hold the compare button to flip back to the original and check your work, then download a new copy. Everything runs in your browser, so your image is never uploaded and the original file is never changed.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Add your image

Drag your picture onto the box or click to pick a file. It works with PNG, JPG, and WebP. Your image stays in your browser and is never uploaded. As soon as it loads, the background is removed for you.

  2. 2

Keep the automatic cut-out, or switch to color

The tool cuts out the subject automatically on upload, which works best on photos of people. If you would rather clear a plain background by color, switch to the color method: it guesses the color from the corners, and you can click Pick from image to choose a different one.

  3. 3

    Tune the edges

Raise the tolerance if bits of background are left behind, or lower it if too much of your subject is being cut. Add a little edge softness so the cut-out blends in cleanly.

  4. 4

    Download a transparent PNG

Leave the background transparent, or drop in white or a color behind your subject, then save it as a PNG. The original file on your device is left untouched.

Who removes the background from an image

Anyone who wants a clean cut-out of a subject with the background gone can use this. These are the people who use it most:

  • ·Online sellers and marketplace listers. Cut the background from a product photo so it sits on a clean white or transparent page, the way Amazon, eBay, and Etsy listings expect.
  • ·People making logos and graphics. Turn a logo or icon on a solid background into a transparent PNG you can drop onto any color without a box around it.
  • ·Anyone making a profile picture or sticker. Remove the background behind a person or pet to make a clean cut-out for a profile picture, a sticker, or a meme.
  • ·Presentations and documents. Take the white box off an image so it blends into a slide, a flyer, or a document instead of sitting on an obvious rectangle.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove the background from an image?
Add your image to the tool and it removes the background automatically, cutting out the subject as soon as the picture loads. For a plain background you can switch to the color method, which clears the background by color and lets you pick the exact color to remove. Add a little edge softness, then download a transparent PNG. It all happens in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
How does the background remover work?
It has two ways to work. The automatic cut-out uses an AI model that finds the subject, usually a person, and removes everything else in one click. The color method reads the color of the background and clears every pixel that matches it, starting from the edges and working inward, so a matching color inside your subject (like a white shirt on a white background) is kept. The tolerance slider controls how many shades count as background.
Does the automatic background removal upload my photo?
No. The automatic cut-out runs an AI model that loads and runs inside your browser. The model file is served from this site, downloads once the first time you use it, and then runs on your own device. Your photo is never uploaded to a server, the same as the color method.
What does the automatic cut-out work best on?
It is built to cut out people, so photos of a person, a portrait, or a selfie come out best, even against a busy background. For products, logos, or other objects on a plain background, the color method often gives a cleaner edge. You can switch between the two at any time.
Will it work on any photo?
It works best on a photo with a plain or even background, like a product on white, a logo on a solid color, or a person shot against a smooth wall. A busy background with many colors, or one that is close in color to the subject, is harder. In that case, adjust the tolerance and edge softness to get the cleanest cut you can.
Can I get a transparent PNG?
Yes. Transparent is the default, so the file you download has no background behind your subject and you can place it on any color. You can also drop white or a custom color behind the subject before you save if you would rather have a solid background.
Are my images private?
Yes. The whole process runs in your browser. Your image is never uploaded to a server or saved anywhere, and the original file on your device is never changed. Once the page has loaded you can even use it offline.
Is this background remover free?
Yes. It is completely free with no signup, no limits, and no watermark added to your image. Use it as often as you like.
