What resizing PDF pages does

Each page is placed onto a new sheet at the size you pick, scaled up or down to fit. The scaling keeps the width and height in proportion, so a circle stays a circle. When the old and new shapes differ, the leftover space becomes an even margin on two sides rather than a stretch.

The content is placed, not redrawn, so text stays sharp and selectable at any size. Scaling a page up does not blur it the way enlarging a photo would, because the text and vector graphics are drawn fresh at the new size by whatever opens the file.

A4 and US Letter are the pairing that causes most of the trouble. They are close enough that a document often prints without an error, but different enough that the bottom of an A4 page can be clipped on Letter paper, or a Letter document can sit oddly high on A4.

A4 and US Letter: why the mismatch causes trouble

A4 is 210 by 297 mm. US Letter is 216 by 279 mm. A4 is about 6 mm narrower and 18 mm taller, which is just enough to matter and just close enough that nothing warns you.

In practice that shows up two ways. Printing an A4 document on Letter paper risks losing the bottom, because the page is taller than the paper. Printing Letter on A4 leaves a strip of white at the bottom and can push content off the right edge, because Letter is wider.

Many printers work around this by scaling to fit, which quietly shrinks the page by a few percent. Usually harmless, but not if the document has to be printed at exact size, which matters for anything with a scale, a form field, or a signature block that has to line up.

Resizing the file properly beforehand avoids the guesswork. If you are sending a document to someone in another country, it is worth knowing that A4 is standard almost everywhere except the United States and Canada.

When to change PDF page size
