What signing a PDF in your browser does

Signing a PDF here means putting a picture of your signature onto the page, in the spot where you would have put a pen. That is the same thing that happens when you print a form, sign it, and scan it back in, minus the printer, the scanner, and the twenty minutes.

You can make that signature three ways. Draw it, which is easiest on a phone or a tablet where you can use a finger or a stylus. Type your name and let it be set in a script font. Or take a photo of a signature you wrote on paper and let the tool strip the paper away, leaving just the ink on a transparent background.

However you make it, the signature is drawn on top of the page. The text and layout underneath are not touched, so the document you send back is the one you were sent, with your mark added.

Electronic signatures and digital signature certificates

The two terms get used as if they mean the same thing, and they do not. Knowing which one a document wants saves a lot of back and forth.

An electronic signature is a mark you make to show you agree. A drawn signature, a typed name, even a tick in a box can count. It is what this tool produces, and it is what the vast majority of everyday forms, leases, consent slips, and freelance contracts ask for. In the United States it is covered by the ESIGN Act and UETA; in the European Union, by eIDAS.

A digital signature certificate is a cryptographic seal. A certificate issued to you signs the file itself, so a reader can check both who signed and whether a single byte has changed since. Some official filings, tenders, and regulated industries require one, sometimes as a qualified signature from an approved provider. No browser tool can make one for you, because it depends on a key that is genuinely yours.

A practical rule: if the document simply says “sign here”, an electronic signature is what it means. If it says digital certificate, qualified signature, or names a provider, you need certificate-based software instead.

When you need to sign a PDF

Can the signature be removed from the PDF afterwards?

Is my signature stored anywhere?
