About the VCF to CSV converter
What is a VCF file?
A VCF file, also called a vCard, is the standard file for contacts. Phones and email apps use it to share and back up contacts. Each contact is a block of lines that starts with BEGIN:VCARD, with one line per detail, like TEL;TYPE=CELL:+44 7700 900123.
That layout works well between contact apps but not in a spreadsheet. A CSV puts each contact on one row and each detail in its own column, which is what Excel, Google Sheets, and most import tools expect.
Why use our VCF to CSV converter
- ·Your contacts stay private. The file is converted in your browser and never uploaded.
- ·Ready for where it is going. Column names for spreadsheets, Google Contacts, or Outlook.
- ·Every phone and email. Contacts with several numbers get a column for each, with labels like Mobile and Work.
- ·Many files at once. Drop a folder's worth of .vcf files and get one CSV.
- ·Free. No signup and no watermark. Files up to 50 MB each.
How to convert a VCF file to CSV
- 1
Add your .vcf file
Drag your .vcf file onto the box or click Choose .vcf files. You can add one file with all your contacts, or many files with one contact each, and they are joined into one list. You can also paste vCard text into the box below.
- 2
Pick where the CSV is going
Choose Spreadsheet to open the contacts in Excel or Google Sheets, Google Contacts import to load them into a Google account, or Outlook import to load them into Outlook. Each one uses the column names that app expects.
- 3
Check the preview
The table shows your contacts the way they will look in the CSV, with the number of contacts and columns above it. Notes appear here if anything could not be carried over, such as photos.
- 4
Download the CSV
Click Download CSV to save the file, or Copy to paste it somewhere else. The file is named after your .vcf file, or contacts.csv when you added more than one.
How to export contacts as a VCF file
If your contacts are still on your phone or in an account, export them as a .vcf file first:
- ·iPhone (through iCloud). If your contacts sync with iCloud, go to iCloud.com/contacts on a computer and sign in. Click the Actions button at the top of the list, choose Select All Contacts, then click the Share button and choose Export vCard.
- ·Android (Google Contacts app). Open the Contacts app, tap Fix & manage, then Export to file. Choose the accounts to export and tap Export to .VCF file.
- ·Google Contacts on a computer. Select the contacts, click More actions, then Export, and pick the vCard format. Google can also export a Google CSV directly, so you only need this converter for contacts that are not in Google.
How to import the CSV into Google Contacts or Outlook
Google Contacts
Convert with the Google Contacts import option. In Google Contacts on a computer, click Import, choose the CSV, and click Import. Google takes up to 3,000 contacts per file and 25,000 contacts per account, so split a bigger list into several files. Several labels in one contact are written as Friends ::: Family, the way Google expects.
Outlook
Convert with the Outlook import option, which uses the column names from Microsoft's sample contacts file. Microsoft recommends UTF-8, which is what this converter writes.
- ·Classic Outlook for Windows. File, Open & Export, Import/Export, Import from another program or file, Comma Separated Values. Pick the CSV, then the Contacts folder, and click Finish.
- ·New Outlook. Open People, select Import contacts, browse to the CSV, and select Import.
- ·Outlook.com. Open People, select Manage contacts, then Import contacts, browse to the CSV, and select Import.
Outlook's contact form has fixed slots: three emails, one web page, and set phone slots such as Mobile, Home, and Business. Anything that does not fit is left out, and the converter tells you how many values that was. Birthdays saved without a year are left blank, since Microsoft's sample file writes full dates like 1/20/1981.
What carries over from vCard to CSV
| In the vCard | In the CSV |
|---|---|
| Name (FN and N) | Full name, first, middle, and last name, prefix, and suffix |
| Phone (TEL) | One column per phone, with its label |
| Email (EMAIL) | One column per email, with its label |
| Address (ADR) | Street, PO box, city, region, postal code, and country |
| Company (ORG, TITLE) | Organization, department, and job title |
| Website (URL) | One column per website, with its label |
| Birthday and anniversary | Dates as 1990-04-12, or --04-12 when there is no year |
| Nickname, notes, categories | Their own columns |
| Photo | Left out, since a CSV cannot hold images |
Labels come from the vCard's types, so CELL becomes Mobile and WORK with FAX becomes Work Fax. Custom labels saved by an iPhone or Google Contacts, like Personal or Home Page, are kept as they are. A number or email marked as preferred is listed first.
Opening the contacts CSV in Excel
- ·Accented letters. When you double-click a CSV, Excel often reads it in an older encoding unless the file starts with a byte order mark. The converter adds one by default so names like Müller and José show correctly.
- ·Everything in one column. In countries that write decimals with a comma, Excel expects semicolons between columns. Pick Semicolon as the separator and convert again.
- ·Phone numbers changed. Excel may drop a leading 0 or show a long number as 4.477E+11. To keep numbers as they are, use Data, From Text/CSV, and set the phone columns to Text before loading.
Who converts VCF files to CSV
- ·People switching phones or email apps. Move contacts exported from an iPhone or Android phone into Google Contacts or Outlook, or keep a copy in a spreadsheet before you switch.
- ·Small businesses. Turn a phone's contact list into a spreadsheet of customers or suppliers, or load it into a CRM or email tool that only imports CSV.
- ·Anyone cleaning up contacts. Sort, find duplicates, and fix names in Excel or Google Sheets, where a long list is much easier to edit than one card at a time.
- ·Event and club organizers. Build a mailing or phone list from contacts people shared as vCards, then use it for invitations or a group message.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert a VCF file to CSV?
- Drag your .vcf file onto the converter, pick Spreadsheet, Google Contacts import, or Outlook import, then click Download CSV. The conversion happens in your browser, so the file is not uploaded.
- How do I open a VCF file in Excel?
- Excel cannot open a .vcf file as a table, because each contact is a block of lines instead of a row. Convert it to CSV here with the Spreadsheet option, then open the CSV in Excel. Each contact becomes one row.
- Can I convert many VCF files at once?
- Yes. Choose or drop as many .vcf files as you like, and all of their contacts go into one CSV. This helps when a phone saved each contact as its own file.
- Which vCard versions does it read?
- vCard 2.1, 3.0, and 4.0. That covers files from iPhone and iCloud, Android phones, Google Contacts, and Outlook. Older Android files that store accented letters as quoted-printable text are decoded too.
- Why do accented letters look wrong when I open the CSV in Excel?
- When you double-click a CSV, Excel often reads it in an older encoding unless the file starts with a byte order mark, which turns letters like ü and é into odd symbols. Keep the byte order mark option switched on, which it is by default, so Excel reads the file as UTF-8.
- Why did Excel change my phone numbers?
- Excel guesses that a column of digits holds numbers, so it can drop a leading 0 or show a long number like 447700900123 as 4.477E+11. The CSV itself is correct. To keep the numbers as typed, open the file through Data, From Text/CSV, and set the phone columns to Text.
- Are contact photos included?
- No. A CSV file can only hold text, so photos are left out. The converter tells you how many contacts had a photo. Everything else on the card carries over.
- Should I use CSV or VCF to move contacts to Google Contacts?
- Google Contacts imports both. If you just want to move contacts, import the .vcf file as it is. Convert to CSV when you want to edit or clean up the contacts in a spreadsheet first, then import the CSV with the Google Contacts import option.
- Are my contacts uploaded anywhere?
- No. The .vcf file is read and converted in your browser. Your contacts never leave your device, and nothing is saved when you close the page.
