What the Java formatter does

Java can end up with uneven spacing after edits, merges, or a quick copy and paste. A formatter rewrites the code with even indentation, one statement per line, and consistent spacing, so the structure is clear at a glance. It keeps your code working the same and only changes the layout. This tool formats your code with clang-format, which runs fully in your browser.

Why use our Java formatter

  • ·Free. No signup, no paywall.
  • ·Runs in your browser. Your code is never uploaded, so it is safe for private projects.
  • ·Keeps behavior. Format changes only the layout, never what your code does.
  • ·Powered by clang-format. Pick a base style like Google so the output matches common project settings.
  • ·Syntax highlighting. The editor colours your code so it is easy to scan as you work.

Java formatting options

Java indentation

Rewrites nested blocks with even indentation so classes, methods, and loops line up. Choose 2 or 4 spaces per level to match your project.

Beforeclass A{void run(){int x=1;}}Afterclass A { void run() { int x = 1; } }

Brace placement

Puts braces where the chosen style expects them and gives each statement its own line, so the structure of the code is clear at a glance.

Beforeif(ok){go();}else{stop();}Afterif (ok) { go(); } else { stop(); }

Consistent spacing

Adds spaces around operators, after commas, and after keywords so the code reads cleanly. It never changes what the code does.

Beforeint sum=a+b,diff=a-b;Afterint sum = a + b, diff = a - b;

Style presets

Pick a base style like Google, LLVM, Chromium, Mozilla, WebKit, or Microsoft. Google is the common default for Java code.

Beforevoid m( int a ,int b ){}Aftervoid m(int a, int b) {}

When to format Java

A formatter helps any time code is hard to read. These are the cases that come up most:

  • ·Cleaning up before review. Format code so a teammate can read it in a pull request.
  • ·Fixing spacing after a merge. Reset uneven indentation and spacing to one consistent style.
  • ·Cleaning up a snippet. Fix the spacing on code you pasted from a chat or a web page.
  • ·Learning Java. See how code breaks into clear lines while you are still learning.

Run the same Java formatter on your own files

This tool formats Java with clang-format, using the style you pick (Google by default). You can run clang-format locally for the same result:

ToUse
Format a file in placeclang-format -i --style=Google Main.java
Save the style for a projectclang-format --style=Google --dump-config > .clang-format
Format on saveMost editors, including VS Code and IntelliJ with a plugin, can run clang-format on save

Many Java teams use google-java-format instead, which is a separate tool with its own fixed rules. It produces similar Google-style code, but not always identical line breaks, so pick one and use it everywhere.

Java and JavaScript are different languages. If your code is JavaScript, use the JavaScript formatter instead. These formatters also run right in your browser:

Java formatter questions

What is a Java formatter?
A Java formatter takes code with messy spacing and rewrites it with even indentation, clear brace placement, and consistent spacing. It does not change what the code does, only how it looks, so it is easier to read, review, and debug.
How do I format Java code?
Paste your code into the input box, pick your base style and indentation, then click Format. The clean version appears below. Click the copy button to copy it, or download it as a .java file.
What does it use to format the code?
It uses clang-format compiled to WebAssembly, running in your browser. clang-format can format Java with well known base styles like Google, so the output matches what many projects and editors produce, with no setup and no install.
Does it change how my code behaves?
No. Format only adjusts spacing, indentation, and line breaks. It keeps your code working exactly the same. It rewrites the layout, not the logic.
What options can I change?
You can choose the base style (Google, LLVM, Chromium, Mozilla, WebKit, or Microsoft) and the indentation, 2 or 4 spaces per level. Both options apply when you click Format.
Is my code kept private?
Yes. Formatting runs in your browser. This tool does not upload or store your code. It downloads the formatter when you first use Format, so the first use needs an internet connection.
