What the dice roller does
It rolls any set of dice you would use at a table: one d6 for a board game, 2d6 for Monopoly or Catan, or a d20 with a bonus for a role-playing game. Every die is drawn on screen with its result, and the total shows how it was added up.
For role-playing games it also reads dice notation, including rules that keep or drop the highest or lowest dice. That covers rolling with advantage and rolling 4d6 drop lowest for ability scores.

Dice notation: how to write 2d6+3 and 4d6 drop lowest
Dice notation is the short way games write a roll. The number before the d is how many dice, and the number after it is how many sides. The Dice notation box in the tool reads all of these, in upper or lower case:
| Notation | What it rolls |
|---|---|
| 2d6 | Roll two six-sided dice and add them up. |
| d20 | Roll one 20-sided die. With no number in front, the count is 1. |
| 1d20+5 | Roll a d20 and add 5. |
| 2d6+1d8-2 | Mix different dice, then take away 2. |
| 4d6dl1 | Roll four d6 and drop the lowest one. 4d6d1 means the same. |
| 4d6dh1 | Roll four d6 and drop the highest one. |
| 2d20kh1 | Roll two d20 and keep the highest. 2d20k1 means the same. |
| 2d20kl1 | Roll two d20 and keep the lowest. |
| d% | Roll a percentile die, the same as d100. |
Dice odds: average rolls and 2d6 chances
On a single fair die, every face is equally likely, so the average roll is halfway between the lowest and highest number:
| Die | Range | Average roll |
|---|---|---|
| d4 | 1 to 4 | 2.5 |
| d6 | 1 to 6 | 3.5 |
| d8 | 1 to 8 | 4.5 |
| d10 | 1 to 10 | 5.5 |
| d12 | 1 to 12 | 6.5 |
| d20 | 1 to 20 | 10.5 |
| d100 | 1 to 100 | 50.5 |
Add dice together and the middle totals become much more common than the ends, because more combinations reach them. Two six-sided dice can land 36 ways:
| 2d6 total | Ways to roll it | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 1 of 36 | 2.8% |
| 3 | 2 of 36 | 5.6% |
| 4 | 3 of 36 | 8.3% |
| 5 | 4 of 36 | 11.1% |
| 6 | 5 of 36 | 13.9% |
| 7 | 6 of 36 | 16.7% |
| 8 | 5 of 36 | 13.9% |
| 9 | 4 of 36 | 11.1% |
| 10 | 3 of 36 | 8.3% |
| 11 | 2 of 36 | 5.6% |
| 12 | 1 of 36 | 2.8% |
D&D dice rolls: advantage, disadvantage, and ability scores
- ·Advantage (2d20kh1). Roll two d20 and keep the higher. The average goes up from 10.5 to about 13.8, and the chance of a natural 20 nearly doubles, from 5% to 9.75%.
- ·Disadvantage (2d20kl1). Roll two d20 and keep the lower. The average drops to about 7.2, and a natural 20 needs both dice to show 20, a 1 in 400 chance.
- ·Ability scores (4d6dl1). Roll four d6, drop the lowest, and add the rest. Scores run from 3 to 18 and average about 12.2, compared with 10.5 for a plain 3d6.
When a roll uses a single d20, such as 1d20+5 or a roll with advantage, the tool marks a natural 20 or a natural 1 under the total.
When to use an online dice roller
- ·Board games. Replace lost or missing dice for games like Monopoly and Catan, which use two six-sided dice, or Yahtzee, which uses five.
- ·Tabletop role-playing games. Roll the full set of dice used in Dungeons and Dragons and similar games, with modifiers, advantage, and ability scores.
- ·Games over a video call. Roll on screen so everyone can see the result, or copy it into the chat.
- ·Teaching probability. Roll 2d6 many times to show why 7 comes up most often, or compare the averages of different dice.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I roll dice online?
- Click the dice you want under Choose your dice, then click Roll. The dice tumble and land, and the total is shown under them. You can also type a roll such as 2d6+3 in the Dice notation box and press Enter.
- Is this dice roller fair?
- Yes. Every die uses your browser's secure random number generator, crypto.getRandomValues(), with a method that removes rounding bias, so each face has exactly the same chance. The result is picked before the animation starts, so the tumble has no effect on it.
- How do I roll with advantage or disadvantage?
- Click Advantage under Common rolls, or type 2d20kh1. This rolls two d20 and keeps the higher one. For disadvantage, click Disadvantage or type 2d20kl1 to keep the lower one. To add a bonus, type it on the end, such as 2d20kh1+5.
- How do I roll 4d6 and drop the lowest?
- Click Ability score under Common rolls, or type 4d6dl1. The tool rolls four six-sided dice, crosses out the lowest, and adds up the other three. Roll it six times for a full set of ability scores. Your last 50 rolls stay in the list below the tool.
- What does 2d6 mean?
- It means roll two six-sided dice and add them up. The number before the d is how many dice to roll, and the number after it is how many sides each die has. So 3d8 means three eight-sided dice, and d20 means one 20-sided die.
- What is the most common roll with two dice?
- 7. Six of the 36 ways two dice can land add up to 7, so it comes up 1 time in 6 on average. 2 and 12 are the rarest, with 1 way each, or 1 time in 36.
- How do I roll a d100 or percentile dice?
- Click d100, or type d% or 1d100. You get a whole number from 1 to 100, each equally likely. With physical dice, the same roll is made with two ten-sided dice, one for the tens and one for the ones.
- Can I roll a die with any number of sides?
- Yes. Type it in the Dice notation box, such as 1d3, 2d7, or 1d30. Dice can have from 2 to 1,000 sides. Dice that are not in the standard set show as a circle.
- How many dice can I roll at once?
- Up to 100 dice in one roll, in any mix of sizes. When you roll more than 12, the dice are drawn smaller so they all fit on screen.
- Can I roll dice without the animation?
- Yes. If your device is set to reduce motion, the dice show the result straight away with no tumble.
- Are my rolls saved?
- No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Your roll history is cleared when you reload or close the page.
