JPG to PNG Converter

Turn JPG and JPEG photos into PNG files with no further loss in quality. Add one image or many and download the PNGs one by one or as a ZIP. The conversion runs in your browser, so your images are never uploaded.

Drag and drop JPG images here, or

Add one image or many, up to 50 MB each. Nothing is uploaded.

PNG is lossless, so the image loses no more detail. Files come out larger than the JPG, often several times larger for photos. A JPG has no transparency, so the background stays as it is.

What converting JPG to PNG does

JPG is the format cameras and phones use for photos. It keeps files small by throwing away detail the eye is unlikely to notice. PNG is lossless: it stores every pixel exactly, and it can be opened and saved again as often as you like without getting worse.

This converter opens each JPG in your browser and saves the same pixels as a PNG, at the same width and height. It does not add detail, sharpen the image, or remove the background. The PNG looks just like the JPG, and it is usually a larger file.

Why a JPG to PNG conversion does not make the background transparent

Many people convert a JPG to PNG hoping to get a logo or product photo with a see-through background. Changing the format alone cannot do that. A JPG has no transparency at all, so every pixel, including the white or colored background, is solid. The PNG keeps those same solid pixels.

To get a transparent PNG, the background has to be removed. The background remover does this in your browser and saves the result as a PNG, so you do not need to convert the JPG first.

A JPG that shows a gray and white checkerboard behind a logo is a common trap. The checkerboard is part of the picture, not real transparency, and it stays in the PNG.

Does a PNG have better quality than a JPG?

Only from the point of conversion onward. Saving a photo as JPG loses some detail, which can show as faint blocks in smooth areas like the sky and speckles around text and sharp edges. Converting that JPG to PNG keeps those flaws exactly as they are. It cannot bring the lost detail back.

The gain is that the PNG will not get any worse. A JPG loses a little more each time it is edited and saved again, while a PNG can be saved over and over with no change. That makes PNG a good working copy for an image you plan to edit.

The cost is size. Because PNG stores every pixel exactly, a photo usually comes out several times larger than the JPG. If the file is only going to be shared or posted, keeping the JPG is often the better choice. The PNG to JPG converter turns it back into a small file when you are done editing.

How to change a JPG to PNG on Windows and Mac

If you only have one image and would rather use an app you already have, both Windows and macOS can do it without extra software.

  • ·Windows.Open the JPG in Paint, choose File, then Save as, then PNG picture.
  • ·Mac. Open the JPG in Preview, choose File, then Export, and set Format to PNG.

Renaming the file from .jpg to .png does not convert it. The file stays a JPG inside, and some apps and upload forms will reject it or fail to open it. The converter above writes a real PNG and can do a whole batch at once.

When to convert JPG to PNG

  • ·Anyone uploading to a site that asks for PNG. Some upload forms, sticker and emote makers, and app stores only take PNG files. Converting the JPG gives you a file they will accept.
  • ·People who will edit an image many times. Every time a JPG is edited and saved again, it loses a little more detail. Saving your working copy as PNG stops that, because PNG can be saved any number of times with no loss.
  • ·Designers starting a cut-out or logo. A PNG can hold transparency once you erase the background in an editor. Starting from a PNG means the see-through areas are kept when you save.
  • ·Anyone who wants to drop photo metadata. The PNG is made from the picture alone, so camera details and GPS location stored in the JPG are not carried over.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert JPG to PNG?
Add your JPG images to the converter above and wait for each file to finish. Then download the PNGs one by one or all at once as a ZIP. Everything happens in your browser.
Does converting JPG to PNG improve the quality?
No. The detail a JPG threw away when it was saved is gone for good, so blocky areas and speckles around edges stay in the PNG. What changes is that no more detail is lost from here on, since PNG is lossless.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. A JPG cannot store transparency, so there is no see-through area to keep. The white or colored background comes through exactly as it was. To make it transparent, use the background remover, which saves a PNG with the background cut out.
Why is my PNG so much bigger than the JPG?
JPG keeps photos small by storing an approximation of the picture. PNG stores every pixel exactly, so a photo usually comes out several times larger. The file list shows the old and new size of each image.
Are JPG and JPEG the same thing?
Yes. They are the same format with two spellings of the file extension. Older versions of Windows only allowed three-letter extensions, which is where .jpg came from. The converter accepts .jpg, .jpeg, and .jfif files.
Will phone photos stay the right way up?
Yes. Phones often save photos sideways and add a tag that says which way to turn them. The converter reads that tag and saves the PNG already turned upright.
Does the PNG keep the JPG's EXIF data?
No. Camera details, the date taken, and GPS location are left out of the PNG. Only the picture itself is converted. If you want to keep that data, keep the original JPG as well.
My file ends in .jpg but the converter says it is a WebP. Why?
Some websites send WebP images under a .jpg name, so the file is really a WebP with the wrong extension. The converter checks what is inside the file, not just its name. Use the WebP to PNG converter for that file and you get a real PNG.
Can I convert many JPG files at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like, up to 50 MB each. They are converted one after another, and when more than one is ready you can download them all in a ZIP file.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Your browser does the conversion on your own device, so your images are never sent to a server and nothing is stored anywhere.
