What rotating a PDF does

Every page in a PDF carries a rotation value of 0, 90, 180, or 270 degrees. It tells any reader which edge of the page is the top. Rotating a page changes that number. The text and images underneath are not moved or redrawn at all, which is why the page stays exactly as sharp as it was and the file size hardly changes.

This matters because it is different from the rotate button in most PDF readers. That button turns the view on your screen only. Which rotation angle to pick

There are only three moves, and the one you need depends on how the page went wrong in the first place.

  • ·90 degrees right. Use this when the top of the text points to the left edge of the page. This is the usual fix for a page fed into a scanner rotated one way.
  • ·90 degrees left. Use this when the top of the text points to the right edge. It is the mirror of the case above, and it is worth checking a thumbnail rather than guessing, since turning the wrong way leaves the page upside down.
  • ·180 degrees. Use this when the page is the right shape but upside down. The page keeps its width and height, so an upright page stays upright and a wide page stays wide.

Two clicks in the same direction give you 180 degrees, and four bring a page back to where it started. If you lose track, the reset button returns every page to how it was when you added the file.
