What unlocking a PDF does
A locked PDF is an encrypted one. Its text, images, and fonts are scrambled, and the key to unscramble them is worked out from a password. Your reader asks you for that password, rebuilds the key, and shows you the page.
Unlocking does the same thing once, then writes the result back out without the encryption. The pages are decrypted with the password you give, the security details are dropped from the file, and what you download is the same document in plain form.
Nothing is re-rendered along the way. The text is still text, the images are still at their original quality, and the form fields and links still work. The only difference is that no password is asked for and nothing is held back.

Removing a password vs removing PDF restrictions
People arrive here with two different problems, and knowing which one you have saves a lot of confusion.
The file will not open. Your reader shows a password box before it shows you anything. That is an open password, called the user password in the PDF standard, and the document is genuinely unreadable without it. You need the real password to get past this, and so does this tool.
The file opens, but something is greyed out. No password box appears, yet printing, copying, or editing does nothing. That is a permissions lock, held in place by a second password, the owner password, that you were probably never given. The document itself is encrypted with an empty password for opening, so your reader gets in silently and then obeys the list of things the file says are off limits.
The second kind comes off here without you typing anything, because there is nothing to type. The file already opens; what the tool does is write it back out with the encryption and the list of restrictions gone, so no reader has anything left to obey.

What this tool will not do
It will not open a file you are locked out of. If a PDF asks for a password and you do not have it, this tool is no more use to you than your own reader is, because it gets in the same way: by using the password.
That is not a limit we chose. Modern PDFs are encrypted with AES, and the key comes from the password itself. There is no master key, no back door, and nothing hidden in the file to work backwards from. A tool that claims to open any locked PDF is either guessing passwords, which only works on short and obvious ones, or it is not telling you the truth about what it does.
Restrictions are the exception, and only because they were never a real lock. A file whose printing is blocked still opens on your screen, which means it was already decrypted with a password that happens to be empty. Nothing has to be broken to lift that. The document is simply written back out without the list of rules.
Two practical notes. Remove the password from files you own, or ones you were given the password to and are allowed to use. And if you unlock a file to file it away, remember the protection is now gone: the copy on your drive is readable by anyone who reaches it, so if it leaves your machine again you may want toput a password back on it.
When to remove a PDF password
A password earns its place while a file is in transit. Once it has arrived somewhere safe, it usually just gets in the way:
- ·Anyone re-opening the same statement every month. Banks send statements locked to a date of birth or an account number. Unlock the copy you are filing so you are not typing that in every time you look something up.
- ·Anyone filing documents into an archive. Locked files cannot be searched, indexed, or previewed by most document systems. Removing the password is usually the step that makes a file findable later.
- ·Anyone merging or editing a locked file. Most PDF tools, ours included, cannot open an encrypted file at all. Take the password off first, then split, merge, or rearrange it.
- ·Anyone stuck with a greyed out print button. A file can open perfectly and still refuse to print or copy. That is a permissions lock, and it comes off here without a password at all.
Once the file is unlocked, the rest of our PDF tools can open it: merge it with other files, split out the pages you need, or flatten it so the form fields can no longer be changed.

- Is it legal to remove a password from a PDF?
- Removing the password from your own file, or one you have been given the password to and are allowed to use, is ordinary document handling. Getting into a file you have no right to read is not, and this tool cannot help with it anyway, since it needs the real password.
- Why does the unlocked file open in my reader but not in another tool?
- Almost always because a copy of the old file is still cached. Close the document everywhere, download it again, and check you opened the file whose name ends in unlocked. If a tool still refuses it, the original may have been damaged before it reached you.
