What is a HEIC file?

HEIC is the default photo format on iPhones and iPads, and Samsung and some other Android phones can save photos as HEIC too. The name comes from HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format), and the pictures inside are compressed with HEVC, the same method used for H.265 video. That makes the files much smaller than JPGs of similar quality, which saves space on your phone.

The problem is support. Apple devices open HEIC without any trouble, but Windows needs extra extensions to show it, and plenty of websites, forms, and older apps refuse a HEIC upload. JPG works everywhere, which is why people convert.

This converter decodes each HEIC file in your browser and saves it again as a JPG (or a PNG if you choose). It turns the photo the right way up and can copy the date taken and camera details into the new file.

Why use our HEIC to JPG converter

  • ·Free. No signup, no watermark, no daily limit.
  • ·No upload. Your photos are converted on your own device and never sent to a server.
  • ·Many files at once. Add a whole batch and download every JPG in one ZIP.
  • ·Keeps the date taken. Photo apps can still sort your JPGs by when they were shot.
  • ·Removes the location. GPS data is left out by default, so you can share the JPG safely.

How to convert HEIC to JPG

  1. 1

    Add your HEIC photos

Drag your .heic or .heif files onto the box, or click to pick them. You can add one photo or a whole folder's worth at once. Nothing is uploaded.

  2. 2

    Pick JPG or PNG

JPG is the right choice for almost every photo. Set the quality (92% is the default) and choose whether to keep the date taken and camera details, with or without the location.

  3. 3

    Wait for the conversion

Each photo is converted in your browser, one after another. The list shows the new size of every file as it finishes.

  4. 4

    Download the JPGs

Download each photo on its own, or download them all in one ZIP file. Your original HEIC files are not changed.

HEIC converter options

  • ·Save as JPG or PNG. JPG makes small files that work everywhere. PNG is lossless, but a photo saved as PNG is several times larger, so only use it when you plan to edit the image further.
  • ·JPG quality. Goes from 50% to 100%. The default of 92% looks the same as the original for most photos. Around 80% gives noticeably smaller files that still look good on screens and in email.
  • ·Keep photo details. Copies the EXIF data from the HEIC into the JPG, including the date taken, the camera and lens, and the exposure settings. Turn it off for a JPG with no metadata at all.
  • ·Remove location. On by default. It leaves the GPS coordinates out of the JPG, so the file does not show where the photo was taken.

If you change an option after adding files, the converter runs again on every file with the new setting.

Keep the HEIC originals if storage on your phone is tight, and convert copies when you need to share or upload. The converter makes a standard JPG, so extra data in the HEIC such as Portrait mode depth information and HDR brightness data is not carried over.

How to stop your iPhone or Samsung phone saving photos as HEIC

If you would rather not convert at all, change the camera settings on your phone:

  • ·Take new photos as JPG. On an iPhone, go to Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos are saved as JPG from then on, but they take up more space.
  • ·Samsung Galaxy phones. Open the Camera app, tap the settings gear, and turn off High efficiency pictures (on recent models it is under Advanced picture options).
  • ·Convert when copying to a computer. On an iPhone, go to Settings, then Photos, and under Transfer to Mac or PC choose Automatic. Photos copied over a cable are then converted to JPG on the way.

Neither setting changes photos already saved as HEIC. On a Mac you can also open a HEIC in Preview and use File, then Export, and pick JPEG. For a batch of photos on any computer, the converter above is the quickest way.

When to convert HEIC to JPG

  • ·Windows users with iPhone photos. Windows does not open HEIC files without extra extensions from the Microsoft Store. Converting to JPG means the photos open in any app.
  • ·Anyone uploading to a website or form. Many job sites, government forms, online shops, and older content systems only accept JPG or PNG and reject a HEIC upload.
  • ·People sending photos to others. A JPG opens on every phone and computer, so the person you send it to does not have to work out how to open a HEIC file.
  • ·Anyone editing in older software. Some photo editors, print shops, and design tools still cannot read HEIC. A JPG or PNG works in all of them.

Frequently asked questions

What is a HEIC file?
HEIC is the photo format iPhones and iPads use by default, and some Android phones use it too. It stores the picture with HEVC (H.265) compression, so files are usually much smaller than a JPG of similar quality. The downside is that many apps, websites, and Windows computers cannot open it without extra software.
How do I convert HEIC to JPG?
Add your HEIC photos to the converter above, leave the format set to JPG, and wait for each file to finish. Then download the photos one by one or all at once as a ZIP. Everything happens in your browser.
How do I convert HEIC to JPG on Windows?
Open this page in any browser on Windows, such as Edge or Chrome, add your HEIC files, and download the JPGs. Nothing needs to be installed. Without a converter, Windows needs the HEIF and HEVC extensions from the Microsoft Store before it can even open a HEIC file.
Can I convert many HEIC files at once?
Yes. Add as many files as you like. They are converted one after another, and when more than one is ready you can download them all together in a ZIP file.
Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?
JPG uses lossy compression, so a small amount of detail is lost each time a photo is saved as JPG. At the default 92% quality the difference is very hard to see. If you need no further loss at all, choose PNG, which is lossless but makes much larger files.
Why is my JPG bigger than the HEIC file?
HEIC compresses photos more efficiently than JPG, so the same photo usually takes up more space as a JPG. Lowering the JPG quality to around 80% makes the file smaller while still looking good for most uses.
Does the JPG keep the date taken and location?
By default the JPG keeps the photo details from the HEIC file, such as the date taken, the camera model, and the exposure settings, and removes the GPS location. Turn off "Remove location" to keep the location too, or turn off "Keep photo details" to remove everything. PNG files never keep these details.
Will my photo be rotated the wrong way?
No. The converter turns the picture the right way up and marks the JPG as already upright, so viewers do not rotate it a second time.
Does it convert Live Photos?
It converts the still photo. A Live Photo is a HEIC file plus a separate short video (.mov) file, and the video part is not included in the HEIC file, so it is not part of the JPG.
Why does it say my file is already a JPG?
Some apps save a JPG with a .heic name, or the file was converted before. The converter checks what is inside the file, not just its name. A file that is already a JPG can be renamed to .jpg and used as it is.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The HEIC decoder runs inside your browser, so your photos never leave your device and nothing is stored anywhere.
