HEIF to PNG Converter

Convert HEIF and HEIC images to PNG without adding any new compression. Transparent backgrounds stay transparent, and you can convert a whole batch and download it as a ZIP. Everything runs in your browser, so your images are never uploaded.

Drag and drop HEIC or HEIF images here, or

Add one photo or many. HEIC and HEIF, up to 50 MB each. Nothing is uploaded.

Save as

PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, but photos come out several times larger than JPG. PNG files do not keep the photo details (date taken, camera, location).

What is a HEIF file?

HEIF stands for High Efficiency Image File Format. It is a container for images, set out by the MPEG group, that can hold one picture or several, along with transparency, depth data, and metadata. When the pictures inside are compressed with HEVC (H.265), the file is usually called HEIC.

You will find HEIF files under three extensions. .heic is the most common and comes from iPhones, iPads, and Samsung phones. .heif is the general name some apps use, and .hif is used by cameras that shoot HEIF. All three are the same kind of file underneath, and this converter reads them all.

The converter decodes each file in your browser and saves it as a PNG. PNG stores pixels with lossless compression, so nothing is lost in the save, and it keeps any transparency the image has.

Why use our HEIF to PNG converter

  • ·Free. No account, no watermark, no file limit.
  • ·Private. The images are converted on your device and never sent anywhere.
  • ·Lossless output. The PNG adds no compression artifacts of its own.
  • ·Keeps transparency. See-through areas in the HEIF stay see-through in the PNG.
  • ·Batch conversion. Convert a folder of images and get them back in one ZIP.

How to convert HEIF to PNG

  1. 1

Add your HEIF or HEIC files

Drag .heif, .heic, or .hif files onto the box, or click to pick them. Add as many as you need. The files stay on your device.

  2. 2

    Check that PNG is selected

PNG is already chosen on this page. You can switch to JPG at any time if you would rather have smaller files that keep the date taken.

  3. 3

    Let each file convert

The images are decoded and saved as PNG one after another, right in your browser. Each row shows the PNG's pixel size and file size when it is done.

  4. 4

    Download your PNGs

Save each PNG on its own, or use Download all to get every file in a single ZIP. The original HEIF files are left as they were.

Should you convert HEIF to PNG or JPG?

The converter can make either, so pick the one that fits what you will do with the image next.

For everyday phone photos you want to send or upload, JPG is usually the better choice. Our HEIC to JPG converter is set up for that.

What carries over from HEIF to PNG

  • ·Kept: the full image at its original pixel size, turned the right way up, with any transparency.
  • ·Reduced: 10-bit color, common in camera .hif files and HDR photos, is saved as 8-bit. HDR brightness information is not carried over.
  • ·Not kept: EXIF metadata (date taken, camera, GPS location), Portrait mode depth data, and any extra images stored in the same file. Only the first image in a HEIF file is converted.

How to convert HEIC to PNG on a Mac

A Mac can do it without any extra software. Open the HEIC in Preview, choose File, then Export, set Format to PNG, and click Save. For several files, open them together in Preview, select them all in the sidebar, and choose File, then Export Selected Images. Windows, ChromeOS, and Linux have no built-in way to do this, so use the converter above.

Who converts HEIF to PNG

  • ·Designers and editors. PNG is lossless, so you can edit, crop, and save the image again without adding new compression artifacts at each step.
  • ·Anyone with a transparent HEIF. Cutouts, stickers, and other images with a see-through background keep their transparency as PNG. JPG would fill it with a solid color.
  • ·People whose app only takes PNG. Some design tools, slide editors, and upload forms accept PNG but not HEIF or HEIC.
  • ·Anyone archiving screenshots or graphics. Text, diagrams, and screenshots stay crisp as PNG, without the blurry edges that JPG compression can add around sharp lines.

Frequently asked questions

Is HEIF the same as HEIC?
Almost. HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) is the container format. HEIC is a HEIF file whose images are compressed with HEVC (H.265), which is what iPhones, iPads, and Samsung phones save. Most files you will meet are both, so this converter accepts .heif, .heic, and .hif files.
How do I convert HEIF to PNG?
Add your HEIF or HEIC files to the converter above. PNG is already selected, so each file is converted as soon as it is added. Then download the PNGs one at a time or all together in a ZIP.
Does converting HEIF to PNG lose quality?
No new compression is added. PNG is lossless, so the PNG holds exactly the pixels the HEIF decoder produced. The one change is color depth: a 10-bit HEIF is saved as an 8-bit PNG, which looks the same on almost every screen.
Why is my PNG so much bigger than the HEIF file?
HEIF uses lossy compression that is very efficient for photos. PNG is lossless, so it has to store every pixel exactly, and a photo saved as PNG is usually several times larger. If you do not need lossless output or transparency, switch to JPG for much smaller files.
Does the PNG keep transparency?
Yes. If the HEIF image has a transparent or partly transparent background, the PNG keeps it. Converting to JPG instead fills transparent areas with white.
Does the PNG keep the date taken and location?
No. The PNG files made here contain only the image, with no EXIF metadata such as the date taken, camera model, or GPS location. If you need the date taken kept, switch the format to JPG, which can copy those details over.
Can I convert .hif files from my camera?
Yes, .hif files are accepted. Several camera brands save HEIF photos with the .hif extension, often in 10-bit color. They are converted like any other HEIF file and saved as 8-bit PNG.
Can it convert AVIF files?
No. AVIF uses the same container as HEIF but a different kind of compression (AV1), and this tool only includes the HEVC decoder used by HEIC and most HEIF files. An AVIF file gets a message saying it is not supported.
Are my images uploaded?
No. The HEIF decoder runs inside your browser, so your images never leave your device and nothing is saved on a server.
