What is a green screen?

A green screen is a plain green background that video software can remove and replace with something else. This is called chroma keying: the editor finds every pixel of that green and makes it transparent.

This page turns a screen into that green background. It is too small to stand in front of, but it is the right size for replacing what is on a phone or monitor in a video, or for filming small objects.

Why use our green screen

  • ·Even color, edge to edge. Full screen with the controls hidden gives the keyer one flat green.
  • ·Any green. Start with pure green or type the hex code your software asks for.
  • ·Brightness control. Dim the green to match your lighting and cut down on spill.
  • ·Green screen images. Download a PNG at 1080p, 4K, a phone size, or any size you type.

How to use your screen as a green screen

  1. 1

    Set the green

Pure green (#00FF00) is selected. If your editing app or a template asks for a specific green, type its hex code into the color box.

  2. 2

Match the brightness to your scene

Lower the brightness slider until the green is not much brighter than the rest of the shot, so it does not glow or throw green light.

  3. 3

    Open it in full screen

Click the preview on the phone, tablet, or monitor you are filming, then choose Hide so the controls are not in the shot.

  4. 4

    Film, then key it out

Record your shot, then use the chroma key or green screen effect in your video editor to replace the green.

Ways to use a green screen on a phone or monitor

  • ·Screen replacement. Film someone using a phone, laptop, or TV that shows green, then key out the green and put a clean screen recording in its place. Fingers on the screen stay in the shot because they are not green.
  • ·Small product shots. Stand a small object in front of a tablet or monitor showing green, then replace the background in your editor.
  • ·A placeholder in an edit. Download a green image at your project's size and use it as a stand-in layer until the final footage is ready.

Tips for a clean chroma key when filming a screen

A screen gives off its own light, which is different from a painted green wall. These habits make the green easier to remove:

  • ·Turn the brightness down. A green that is much brighter than the room glows on camera and casts green light on nearby edges.
  • ·Watch for reflections. A glossy screen reflects lamps and windows as white spots that will not key. Angle the screen or move the lights until they are gone.
  • ·Keep green out of the subject. Anything green in front of the screen will disappear along with it.
  • ·Focus on the subject. Letting the screen go slightly soft hides the pixel grid and the wavy pattern (moiré) cameras sometimes pick up from screens.
  • ·Track the corners for moving shots. If the camera or the device moves, you will need corner tracking in your editor to pin the new image onto the screen.

Green screen or blue screen?

Most camera sensors have twice as many green-sensitive pixels as red or blue ones, so green is recorded with the most detail and the least noise. That is why green keys more cleanly and is the default choice today.

Blue is the better pick when the subject is green or has green in it, such as plants, green clothing, or a green logo. You can switch to the blue screen in one click from the color cards under the preview.

Who uses a screen as a green screen

  • ·App and product video makers. Show an app on a real phone in someone's hand, with a sharp screen recording keyed in.
  • ·Filmmakers. Fill a TV or computer in the background of a scene with footage added in the edit.
  • ·Students and teachers. Try chroma keying in a class project without buying a backdrop.
  • ·Editors. Download a green PNG at the project's size for a placeholder layer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn my screen into a green screen?
Open this page on the device you want to film, click the green preview to go full screen, and choose Hide to remove the controls. The whole display becomes an even green that a video editor can remove with its chroma key effect.
What green should I use for a green screen?
Most chroma key tools can remove any bright, even green, so the pure green (#00FF00) this page starts with works well for screen replacement. If your software or a project template names a specific green, type that hex code into the color box.
Can I download a green screen image?
Yes. Under Download image, choose 1080p (1920 × 1080), 4K (3840 × 2160), Phone (1080 × 1920), or your own size, then choose Download PNG. The PNG is one solid green, ready to drop into a video editor as a placeholder or a background layer.
Why do I see lines or flicker when I film the green screen?
The camera and the screen are refreshing at different rates. Set the camera shutter speed to match the screen, such as 1/60 second for a 60 Hz screen, or try a different frame rate. Lowering the screen brightness can also help on some phones and laptops.
Why is there green light on my subject or hands?
That is green spill, light from the screen bouncing onto things near it. Lower the brightness slider, move the subject a little further from the screen, or angle the screen away. Most editors also have a spill suppression setting.
Can I use a monitor behind me as a green screen on a video call?
Only if it fills everything behind you in the shot, which a single monitor rarely does. For a video call, a green cloth or backdrop works better, or use the app's built-in background blur or replacement.
Should I use a green screen or a blue screen?
Use green in most cases. Cameras record the most detail in green, so it keys cleanly with less light. Choose the blue screen when your subject is green or has green in it, such as a plant or green clothing.
How do I exit the green screen?
Press Esc, or click or tap once to bring back the controls and choose Exit. It is free, needs no signup, and runs entirely in your browser.
