Click the preview to fill your screen. Move the mouse or tap to show the controls, or choose Hide to keep them away until you click or tap. In full screen, use the left and right arrow keys to change color, the up and down arrow keys to change brightness, H to hide or show the controls, and Esc to exit.

What the red screen does

It fills your display with pure red (#FF0000), which lights only the red part of each pixel. The green and blue parts stay dark.

Combined with the brightness slider and a low device brightness, that turns any phone, tablet, or monitor into a dim red light with no white or blue mixed in.

Why use our red screen

  • ·Goes very dim. The brightness slider goes down to 10% on top of your device's own brightness.
  • ·No white left on screen. Hide the controls so only red light comes from the screen.
  • ·Any shade of red. Type a hex code for maroon, crimson, or the exact red you want.
  • ·Stays on. In most current browsers the screen does not dim or lock while it is open.

How to turn your screen red

  1. 1

    Choose your red

Pure red (#FF0000) is selected. For a deeper red, type a hex code such as #800000 into the color box.

  2. 2

Dim it if you need a night light

Turn your device brightness down, then drag the brightness slider toward 10% until the red is only as bright as you need.

  3. 3

    Fill the screen

Click the preview to switch to full screen, then choose Hide so no white or gray controls are left showing.

  4. 4

    Leave when you are finished

Press Esc, or click or tap once and choose Exit.

Using a red screen to keep your night vision

Your eyes take around 20 to 30 minutes to fully adjust to the dark, and one glance at a bright white screen can undo it. Stargazers, astrophotographers, and campers use dim red light instead, because the cells that handle night vision barely react to red.

  • ·Set everything up indoors: open this page, lower your device brightness to its minimum, and set the slider low.
  • ·Turn on Do Not Disturb so a bright notification does not pop up over the red.
  • ·Hide the controls, so the only light from the screen is red.
  • ·Hold the screen low and point it at what you need to see, not at your face or the people near you.

A red screen is not perfect. Even dim red light affects your dark vision a little, so keep it as faint as you can and use it only when you need it.

Checking red subpixels with a full red screen

Every pixel has a red, a green, and a blue part. On a full red screen, only the red parts are lit, which makes problems with them easy to spot:

  • ·A black dot means that pixel's red part does not light up.
  • ·A yellow, magenta, or white dot means its green or blue part is stuck on.

To check all three colors and black and white in one go, use the dead pixel test.

Who uses a red screen

  • ·Stargazers and astrophotographers. Read charts and adjust a camera or telescope without losing night vision.
  • ·Parents and night-shift workers. Get a soft light for a late check on a baby or a dark room, without switching on a lamp.
  • ·Photographers and video makers. Add a red accent light to a scene from a phone or tablet held out of shot.
  • ·Streamers and podcasters. Put a red screen on a tablet outside the door as a simple "recording, do not come in" sign.
  • ·People checking a screen. Look for red subpixels that are dead or for color that is uneven across the display.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make my screen red?
Click the red preview above. Your whole screen turns solid red in full screen. Choose Hide or press H to remove the controls as well.
Why does red light help keep your night vision?
The rod cells your eyes use to see in the dark are much less sensitive to red light than to other colors. A dim red light lets you read a star chart or find your gear while your eyes stay mostly adjusted to the dark. Any bright white light undoes that adjustment.
How dim should a red screen be for stargazing?
As dim as you can make it while still seeing what you need. Turn your device brightness to the lowest setting first, then lower the brightness slider on this page. Turn on Do Not Disturb too, since a bright notification can ruin your night vision.
Can I get a darker red?
Yes. Lower the brightness slider, or type a darker hex code such as #800000 (maroon) or #400000 into the color box. Both make the red less bright without adding any other color.
Is a red screen the same as red light therapy?
No. A screen is much weaker than the lamps used for red light therapy, and it gives off no near-infrared light. A red screen is useful as a dim light, not as a treatment.
Is a red screen good to use before sleep?
A dim red light is less likely to keep you awake than a bright white or blue one, which is why red is a common choice for night lights. Keep it as dim as you can, and no light at all is still best for sleep.
Can I download a red image?
Yes. Under Download image, choose a size such as 1080p or Phone, or enter your own width and height, and choose Download PNG. The image uses the exact red and brightness you picked.
How do I exit the red screen?
Press Esc. On a phone or tablet, tap the screen once to show the controls and tap Exit. On an iPhone the red fills the browser window but cannot hide the address bar, because iPhone browsers do not allow full screen.
